Before I started playing guitar I always wanted to be a DJ, just because I wanted to listen to music all day long. I just love all music, almost all that is. I used to have 2 old Technics belt driven turntables and would fake broadcast in my bedroom playing my parents Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, George Jones and every other LP that I could get my hands on, even some KC and the Sunshine Band….
I started working professionally playing guitar at around age 15 in a local bar band working 2 or 3 nights a week. At that time my influences were mainly hard rock, Ozzy and Sabbath, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden etc. which did not fit into the group I was in. I also was big into ZZ Top, SRV and especially B.B. King which is what got me into the group.
The working band I joined in at the time was TKO which was a cover band doing mainly top 40 and southern rock. This opened my eyes to Duane Allman who is the driving force behind my taking up slide and instrumental music. The Allman Brothers band also turned me onto jazz and how you can virtually take a song and go anywhere you want with it, you don’t have to have lyrics or vocals.
At around this same time I was studying guitar with an amazing musician by the name of Kenny Hays who turned me onto Rhythmic Union, Dixie Dregs, John Hall, Pat Greene and a others. This had another huge impact on my writing and playing. This is where I got my passion for playing instrumental music and extended open jams. Kenny taught me that you get no second takes, so you better know enough and understand theory enough to cut heads at any time.
Worked as a musician up until 93/94 playing in various groups locally and sitting in with other musicians and groups. Had my first recording experience about 91 or 92 working with an unknown local group. Nothing major but it got my interest and from that point forward I knew someday I would be recording my own tracks someday.
Spent some time overseas and played with some various cats in any bar or jam sessions I could find. Most of the time I could not even speak the native language but music is the universal language and we always figured out how to communicate via the music. A lot of amazing fun.
Took a break from playing from 2000 to 2007 (big mistake). End of 06′ I had some health issues that made me realize that without music I am just lost. So now I am back “On the road again” as Willie Nelson would say.
Currently I listen to almost anything, not much up on main stream new releases. Some times I come across something new that I really dig but not to much NEW stuff that I get excited about unless it is from an existing group. My main listening lately is to Alex Skolnick Trio, Attention Deficit, Booker T and the MG’s, Buckethead, Govt Mule, The Black Eyed Peas, AC/DC, Earl Klugh, Miles, Coltrane, Monk, Django and of course The Allman Brothers and B.B. King.
